How We Know
The Fellowship develops people who can move between research and public understanding without flattening either. Fellows learn to identify what is genuinely important in a body of work, understand why the evidence supports it, decide how it should travel, and lead conversations in which the reasoning remains visible.

Serious scientific communication depends on judgement before production. The programme develops four connected capabilities that allow Fellows to communicate across fields, audiences, and formats without weakening the science.

Decide what an audience needs in order to follow the reasoning, rather than assuming that attention is won by removing complexity.
Choose the form that serves the idea — visual, short-form, written, conversational, or live — rather than forcing every finding into the same format.
Make the path from question to evidence to implication visible, so audiences can engage with how knowledge is built, not only with what they are told.

Fellows progress from interpreting scientific work, to shaping public work, to leading evidence-based dialogue. The aim is not a content portfolio alone, but independent editorial and scientific judgement.
Enter unfamiliar science, find the real question, and distinguish the novelty from the surrounding noise.
Build a compelling public form around the idea while preserving the mechanism, evidence, and uncertainty that give it meaning.
Host, present, and critique scientific conversations in which claims are tested against visible evidence and connected to wider consequences.
A Fellow should leave better able to decide what matters, how we know it, who needs to understand it, and which form can carry it without distortion.

Burstcast gives the Fellowship a living source: a scientific conversation in which narrative, claims, data, reasoning, uncertainty, and implications remain connected.
Fellows identify ideas within scientific conversations that deserve to travel further, then shape them for different audiences and media while remaining accountable to the original evidence.
Fellows also learn how rigorous dialogue is prepared and led: why a problem matters, what is genuinely being claimed, which evidence must be seen, where uncertainty remains, and what questions the finding opens next.
The audience should leave with both the story and the science.

Communication is not the final layer added after science is done. It is an intellectual act: deciding what is known, how it is known, and what deserves to be asked next.
Make the science accessible without stripping away the mechanism or the difficulty.
Let audiences see why a claim deserves confidence rather than asking them to accept it.
Communicate limitations honestly while still explaining what the evidence allows us to say.
Use disagreement to deepen understanding, not to manufacture conflict or certainty.
Build work for wider audiences while remaining connected to the source, context, and evidence.
